Careers in Construction with Caitlyn Curley

A construction project takes shape long before the first walls go up. Behind the scenes, teams are using technology to coordinate building systems, map out site logistics, and anticipate challenges before they reach the field. For Caitlyn Curley, that’s where the work gets interesting.

As a VDC Engineer on Dimeo’s in-house Project Services team, Caitlyn helps project teams turn plans and models into practical information they can use throughout construction. Her work spans 3D modeling, building systems coordination, site logistics planning, drone operations, and laser scanning—all to help teams better understand the work ahead and make informed decisions.

But Caitlyn’s path into VDC wasn’t something she had mapped out from the beginning. With an initial interest in architecture, she pursued a degree in Engineering Technology for Architecture before discovering the broader opportunities within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. During her internship at Dimeo, she was introduced to VDC and saw how she could apply her technical and design background through construction technology.

Today, no two days look exactly alike. Some involve coordinating building systems in a 3D model; others mean developing logistics plans or working directly with project teams to solve problems. As Caitlyn puts it, “What I enjoy most is seeing how the work we do behind the scenes actually impacts construction.” She finds it especially rewarding when something she’s developed becomes a tool that helps a team solve a problem or better understand a complex situation.

That connection to the field is a big part of what makes working on an in-house VDC team valuable. Caitlyn collaborates with people across different departments and projects, gaining insight into the construction process while building relationships with the teams she supports. “I think having that direct connection to our project teams allows us to understand their needs better and provide more effective support,” she explains.

Since starting as an intern, Caitlyn has taken on new challenges, become more independent, and built strong relationships across Dimeo. “One of the most rewarding parts of my time at Dimeo has been seeing how much I’ve grown since starting as an intern,” she says. “It’s especially rewarding to know that the work I do contributes to their success.”

For those considering a career in construction, Caitlyn encourages keeping an open mind. There are many ways to contribute to a project beyond traditional field roles, and sometimes the most rewarding path is one you didn’t initially expect.
