Dimeo completed the renovation of two historic structures —the 1928 Gothic-style Swartwout building and the 1866 Street Hall. Their careful conversion enlarged exhibition spaces, collection study rooms, and classroom facilities. With the completion of this project, the Yale Art Gallery spans more than an entire block of Chapel Street.
Additional scope of work included public education areas, offices for the educational department, additional collection storage and support areas, and new a mechanical system to control humidity.
One of the most significant aspects of this phase of renovation was the creation of the Nolen Center for Art and Education. The Nolen Center now resides on the ground floor of Street Hall, fittingly the first home of Yale’s School of Fine Art, founded in 1864, which originally combined teaching and exhibition space.
