Currently in construction on the grounds of the old Newton North High School, re-use of the site will promote the use of existing infrastructure, protect greenfields, and preserve habitat and natural resources. Designed for LEED Silver, the school will feature an Energy Star Rated Cool Roof to reduce building heat gain and the urban heat island effect, and roof drainwater will be collected and reused for toilet flushing. Combined with highly efficient fixtures, this water re-use is estimated to reduce water consumption by around 56%. The choices in highly efficient mechanical systems, insulation, glazing and lighting, as well as a photovoltaic array and high-efficiency HVAC equipment reflect Newton's desire to minimize environmental disruption, while design that includes a fresh air ventilation strategy, daylighting, and comfortable acoustics demonstrate commitment to a healthy and productive learning environment.
