One of the first apartment communities in the country to earn LEED certification, Maverick Landing not only represents a model for green affordable housing developments, but revitalizes a neglected neighborhood and provides a healthy living environment for its residents. The new development replaces dilapidated structures, where many of the residents suffered respiratory ailments, with an award-winning site that includes indoor chemical and pollutant control, and HVAC systems that are free of HCFCs and Halons. Open spaces were restored landscaping designed with low maintenance vegetation and heat island reduction. The site includes a 37 kilowatt solar array and a 75 kilowatt gas-fired cogenerator that provides a significant amount of the development's electricity supply, as well as a solar hot water system.
